Season dates are different from an active ban
The overnight winter parking ban has an annual December 15 to March 31 season. It is enforced only when declared for weather events or continuing clearing operations. During enforcement, street parking is prohibited from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. in the affected regional-centre zone.
Do not assume the entire season is a continuous nightly ban or that a quiet forecast means enforcement has ended. Clearing can continue after snowfall. Check the actual status announcement for your zone before leaving a vehicle overnight.

Zone 1 Central and Zone 2 Non-Central
Zone 1 covers the Halifax Peninsula, downtown Dartmouth inside Highway 111 and some surrounding areas. Zone 2 is the designated non-central area outside Zone 1. These are defined map boundaries, not simply a distinction between Halifax and Dartmouth.
The city may enforce or lift the ban in both zones together, in only one zone, or lift one while continuing the other. Use the city’s address-search tool to establish your zone. A notice that one zone has been lifted does not clear the other zone.

Keep vehicles fully clear of streets and sidewalks
During an enforced ban, park off-street. A car left in the street, or extending from a driveway over a sidewalk, can be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense. Leave the whole vehicle clear of the public route.
The city also warns that a vehicle interfering with snow clearing can be towed at any time of day or night, any day of the year, regardless of overnight-ban status or whether a notification arrived. An inactive overnight ban is not permission to obstruct a plow.

Check status through more than one channel
Sign up for phone, text or email notifications, but do not rely on notifications alone. Current status is published on the city’s Service Updates page and municipal Bluesky feed, and can be checked through 311.
Report vehicles interfering with clearing to 311 during regular business hours. The city asks people to use its after-hours line for a ban violation only if it is an emergency, such as a vehicle blocking a driveway or sidewalk. This guide does not declare today’s ban status.
