Read the current property-tax bill
The bill separates property details, assessed owners, customer number and assessment account number. It shows general municipal tax, education-related charges, area charges, the provincial rate, annual total, current balance and due date. The PIN is used for email or text registration.
Halifax changed its bill format and account numbering. If you pay through online banking, check the Account ID on the current bill rather than assuming a saved banking payee reference is still correct. The customer number, assessment account number and payment Account ID serve different purposes.

Why area charges differ between properties
The general rate is identified as urban, suburban or rural. Area charges vary by property and services. The bill guide describes fire protection, local transit and climate action charges. The fire-protection description uses properties within 1,200 feet of a public hydrant; its map is the source for the actual boundary.
The local-transit description covers properties within one kilometre walking distance of an HRM transit stop, including ferry and park-and-ride services. Do not decide a bill is wrong from straight-line map distance alone. Use the city’s mapped area and contact tax staff about the specific account.

Banking, in-person, mail and credit-card payments
For online banking, the city says to search for HALIFAX REG MUN – ALL PAYMENTS and use the Account ID on the property-tax bill. Cash, debit and cheques are accepted through municipal payment channels. In-person payments are handled at Customer Contact Centres, with a payment drop box available.
Tax payments by mail go to Halifax Regional Municipality, PO Box 818 CRO, Halifax NS B3J 2V2. This is different from the mailing address for other municipal payments. Courier deliveries use Treasury, 40 Alderney Drive, fifth floor, Dartmouth NS B2Y 2N5. Canada Post does not deliver to that courier address.
The municipality does not take tax credit-card payments directly. Its payment page identifies PaySimply as the available third-party credit-card route and warns that third-party fees can apply. Check the fee and delivery timing before choosing that method.

Returned payments, due dates and account help
A $40 fee applies to a payment returned for insufficient funds, a closed account or incorrect banking information. The fee began May 1, 2025 and is applied to the associated account. Check payment details and available funds before a scheduled withdrawal.
Use the due date and balance on your own current bill. This guide does not calculate a tax assessment, establish eligibility for relief or replace the city’s tax account. For bill copies, account questions or a returned-payment charge, call 311 or 1-800-835-6428, or email contactus@311.halifax.ca.
