Aurea Technologies Inc. is seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer specializing in fluid dynamics, structural physics, and electro-mechanical integration to join its innovative team at Burnside Business Park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. As a leader in portable renewable energy solutions, Aurea has developed the world’s most compact and portable wind turbines for off-grid use. The successful candidate will focus on the core physics and performance of the turbine system. They will be responsible for maximizing aerodynamic efficiency, ensuring structural integrity in extreme environments, integrating electric motors/generators, and designing reliable weatherproofing. They will directly advance the foundational technology powering Aurea’s current and future generations of portable wind turbines.
Responsibilities:
- Aerodynamic & Rotor Optimization: Use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to design, simulate, and optimize turbine blade profiles, rotors, and housing geometries for maximum energy capture.
- Structural Analysis & Simulation: Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate stress, fatigue, vibration, and structural limits of mechanical components under high-load conditions.
- Electro-Mechanical Integration: Collaborate on the selection, integration, and thermal management of electric motors, permanent magnet generators, and internal gearing mechanisms.
- Ingress Protection & Weatherproofing: Design robust sealing systems, gaskets, and enclosures to protect internal electronics and mechanical systems from harsh outdoor elements (e.g., rain, snow, dust, sand, salt spray).
- Advanced Material Selection: Evaluate and select advanced materials, coatings, and treatments optimized for weight reduction, rugged durability, and environmental resistance.
- Field Testing: Validate simulation models through hands-on prototype building, wind tunnel testing, and off-grid field testing in cold, wet, and windy weather conditions.
- Failure Analysis: Lead root-cause failure analysis for mechanical components experiencing wear or failure during field testing or extended life-cycle testing.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
- Professional Designation: Must have a P.Eng. designation registered with Engineers Nova Scotia.
- Experience: 4+ years of experience focused on aerodynamic design, rotating machinery, or complex electro-mechanical systems.
- Technical Proficiency: High proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, or Inventor) and strict version control practices.
- Simulation Mastery: Proven, hands-on expertise with CFD and FEA simulation suites (e.g., ANSYS, Star-CCM+, OpenFoam, SolidWorks Simulation, or similar).
- Domain Knowledge: Strong working understanding of small-scale electric motors/generators and mechanical drive-train principles.
- Past experience in wind tunnel design and optimization is a very strong asset.
- Environmental Design: Demonstrated experience designing for harsh environments, including thermal management and strict Ingress Protection (IP ratings).
- Field Adaptability: Must be able and willing to travel and work in remote, off-grid environments for rugged field testing.
Additional Attributes:
- A deep passion for fluid dynamics, physics, and solving complex mechanical problems.
- Highly analytical mindset with the ability to translate complex simulation data into practical, physical hardware changes.
- Strong collaborative and communication skills to work alongside electrical and firmware engineering teams.
