Halifax’s Maritime Museum is open, but check the ship separately
Plan for the indoor museum this week. CSS Acadia is temporarily closed October 15 to 19, 2026, and has a different seasonal schedule.

Choose the museum, the ship, or both
The waterfront museum can fill a Halifax afternoon with ship stories even when its own ship is closed. CSS Acadia has a separate access schedule from the Maritime Museum. Decide which experience matters most before choosing a date and ticket.
The October waterfront thread suggested the Maritime Museum as a way to fill a few hours. It remains a useful rainy-day option, but a visit to the main building is not the same as access to CSS Acadia.
The museum’s current visit page reports an Acadia closure through October 19 inclusive. Do not buy a day around going aboard without checking the separate ship schedule.

Choose the season and ticket
The main museum opens daily through October 31, normally 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with Tuesday evenings until 8. From November 1 it closes on Mondays. The listed adult admission changes from $11 in the May-to-October season to $5.15 in November-to-April.
Tuesday admission is free from 4 to 8 p.m. The museum notes a free accessibility support person and free admission for Indigenous Peoples. Read current details before paying.

Use the entrance that suits your group
The visit page shows automatic-door entrances from Lower Water Street and the waterfront. It also describes wide exhibit paths and wheelchairs available first come, first served. Ask ahead if equipment availability is essential.

Choose the history before choosing the ticket time
The Maritime Museum is a recurring suggestion because its stories belong to Halifax. A May 2024 evening-attractions thread mentioned Titanic and Halifax Explosion exhibits while pointing out the late Tuesday opening. More recent visitor replies repeated those interests, especially for a child already curious about ships. That helps with the choice: come for maritime history, not simply because it is raining near the waterfront.
There is a practical difference between the main museum and CSS Acadia. The ship has its own access dates and hours. For October 15 to 19, 2026, the museum homepage says the ship is closed. That does not cancel an indoor visit. A family whose whole plan is going aboard should choose another date rather than assuming the general admission page overrides a specific closure.
Older visitor itineraries often pile several museums into one day. You may get more from one place if you leave time for the story that interests you. A child fascinated by a shipwreck and an adult browsing every panel are likely to move at different speeds.

October and November need different plans
Through October 31, the main museum lists daily opening from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with Tuesday extended to 8 p.m. Tuesday admission is free from 4 to 8 p.m. That can make a useful short evening visit after work, provided you are comfortable with a smaller time window.
The adult ticket changes from $11 in October to $5.15 from November 1. But November also brings Monday closure, so a lower price does not mean the same weekly schedule. Children five and under are free, and an accessibility support person is admitted free. The museum lists automatic entrances from Lower Water Street and the waterfront, plus two visitor wheelchairs available first come, first served.
For a family buying October admission, compare the $27 family option with your actual ages and numbers rather than assuming it always saves money. Keep the ship closure and the museum opening as separate checks. You can still enjoy an indoor history visit during the closure, then leave a ship visit for a day when its own service is confirmed.
